Our member
veterans represent every military effort from WWII to Iraq and Afghanistan, in
campaigns against dictators, emperors, and terrorist organizations that would
harm and control free peoples and governments of the world, which ultimately affect
our prosperity and freedom. Former veterans of foreign wars of the United
States in the greater Johnsburg area are encouraged to join or support our post
and activities. Please go to our membership page for information.
Memorial Day Ceremonies and Parade, Monday
May 26th, 2008
We conduct Memorial Day activities between 9AM and noon starting
at the Fox River and viewed from the Chapel Hill Bridge, boats afloat, and
surrounding waterfront. The day’s events start with patriotic memory setting
commentary, songs, a bag piper, a naval style wreath laying ceremony. The
parade starts immediately from riverside at the conclusion of the antique
aircraft flyover and goes directly to the Johnsburg Community Club grounds,
where the main memorial ceremony is conducted under the impressive flag
ensemble of the Armed Services Memorial, designed and built as an Eagle Scout project
by Nick Savitsky, with the liaison of our post and the financial support of the
community. Pageantry, military displays, music, and patriotic commentary
appropriately honor veterans who sacrificed their lives for our country’s
future. A picnic and baseball game follows on the Johnsburg Community Club
grounds as we celebrate our freedom and security. Refreshments are donated by
local businesses and served by local civic and service organizations. The greater
Johnsburg community gets involved and as always, the Johnsburg HS Music
Department contributes greatly to the ceremonies and parade.
In addition to conducting the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy monetary prize essay contests in the area schools, we also can be seen donning our universal VFW uniform hats seeking to raise money for our Veterans Relief Fund during Poppy Days… this year May 16th and 17th.
Direct contributions to
this fund may be mailed to the above address specifying “veteran’s relief fund”
on the check. Proper receipts will be provided. Thank you, in advance!
“We
carry on our patriotic chores in the hope that the future resolve of our
younger citizens, witnessing and participating in these events, shall not be
any less patriotic in the future, than what was required as in the past, in
order to preserve our American way of life.”
